The essentials at a glance

  • Seven criteria upfront: wavelength, NiSV certification, skin type check, cooling, package price, realistic expectations, written contract.
  • Twelve questions for your consultation about the technology, your skin, and the process, with examples of good answers.
  • In the contract, look out for package validity, cancellation policies, breaks, and interest rates. Laserazor packages are valid for 24 months in all studios, and from 300 € you can pay in 12 instalments at 0 %.
  • Red flags: pressure to sign immediately, no mention of wavelength, bait pricing for tiny areas, lasers for grey hair.
  • Laserazor does not have a studio in Köln. The decision table shows when Köln makes sense and when Düsseldorf does.

What makes the best laser hair removal

The best laser hair removal is one where the wavelength and energy match your skin type, you're treated by a specialist with NiSV certification, the skin is cooled before every pulse, and the contract clearly sets out the duration, cancellation policy, and the price for the whole package.

There is no one-size-fits-all winner. For fair skin with dark hair, a different wavelength is ideal compared to dark or tanned skin. If you only want your upper lip treated, you'll look out for different things than someone getting their legs and back lasered. That's why this checklist is designed for you to work through during your consultation: first the criteria, then the questions, then the contract.

For context: Laserazor doesn't have a studio in Köln. The nearest Laserazor studio opens in January 2027 in Düsseldorf, Elisabethstraße 30, 40217 Düsseldorf, 22 to 30 minutes by train from Köln Hbf. The checklist applies to every provider, including us. At the end, a decision table helps you figure out when a provider in Köln makes sense and when Düsseldorf does.

Seven criteria before your first appointment

You can clear up most points on the phone or on the website, and the rest during your consultation. If a provider fails on two points upfront, you can save yourself the appointment.

CriterionHow to check thisWhat's good
Technologyask about the wavelength in nanometresa specific wavelength, for dark skin Nd:YAG 1064 nm
Qualificationsask who is doing the treatment and if this person has NiSV qualificationsproof for the individual, not just the studio
Skin Type Checkask if skin type, medication and sun exposure are checked before the first sessioncheck and test pulses before the first treatment
Coolingask how the skin is protected during the treatmentCooling immediately before each pulse
Priceask for the price for the complete area and the whole coursefixed prices per area, course price in writing
Expectationsask how many sessions are realistic8 to 12 sessions and an honest statement about light and grey hair
ContractAsk to see the duration, package validity and cancellation policyin writing, easy to understand, and with no rush

Specialist expertise isn't an optional extra. Since 31 December 2020, the NiSV has required a certificate of competence for laser and IPL hair removal. Enforcement is handled by the federal states; in NRW, the district governments are responsible (occupational health and safety), and anyone offering commercial laser hair removal must notify the relevant authority before starting operations (BMUKN). The consultation: twelve questions

A good consultation clarifies your skin type, hair colour, medication and any skin changes before your first treatment. It uses test pulses to show how your skin reacts, and gives you a realistic number of sessions and the price for the whole course.

Take these questions with you, on paper or on your phone. The answers will tell you more about a studio than any advert. Also pay attention to who is asking: a good studio will ask you at least as many questions as you ask them.

About the technology and the practitioner

  1. Do you use laser or IPL, and what wavelength do you use?
  2. Which wavelength do you use for my skin type, and why?
  3. Who will be treating me, and can I see their NiSV certificate of competence?
  4. How will my skin be cooled during the treatment?

About your skin and hair

  1. What is my skin type, and what does that mean for sun exposure and holidays?
  2. Will my hair actually respond to the laser?
  3. What about my medication, and any moles or tattoos in the treatment area?
  4. Will I get test pulses before the first session?

How the treatment series works

  1. How many sessions are realistic for my treatment area, and how far apart?
  2. How should I prepare, and what's the aftercare?
  3. What happens if a few hairs grow back after the treatment series?
  4. Can I combine multiple treatment areas in one appointment?

What good answers sound like

Good answers are specific. For question 1, you'll hear a number, like Alexandrit 755 nm or Nd:YAG 1064 nm. For question 6, you'll get an honest reply: grey, white, and light blonde hairs don't respond to any laser, and red hair only partially. For question 9, the answer is 8 to 12 sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart, because the laser only targets hair in the growth phase (Gan and Graber 2013). For question 10, you'll get a clear list: no waxing, epilating, or plucking four weeks prior; no sun or fake tan two weeks prior; shave 12 to 24 hours beforehand; and on the day of treatment, no sports, no sauna, no sun, plus SPF 50 for two weeks afterwards. For question 11, they'll explain that hormonal changes can trigger new growth, and a top-up session is usually all you need.

It's also a good sign if side effects are discussed openly. The Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz lists redness, pigmentation changes, and – if the wrong energy level is used – burns as potential risks. A studio that explains this and tells you how they avoid it is taking you seriously.

Contract terms: duration, cancellation, packages, instalments

A fair contract for laser hair removal states the total price, the number of sessions, the package validity, the rules for cancellations and breaks, and – if paying in instalments – the interest and total amount, all in writing and before you sign.

A treatment series takes about one to one and a half years. A lot can happen in that time: moving house, pregnancy, a long summer, or illness. That's why the contract is much more important here than for a single beauty treatment. Check these points before you sign.

Here are the terms at Laserazor

  • Package validity: Packages of 3, 5 or 10 sessions are valid for 24 months. Ten sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart take around one to one and a half years, so the timeframe leaves plenty of room for breaks.
  • Changing studios: Purchased packages are valid in all Laserazor studios, and prices are the same everywhere.
  • Instalments: For total prices from 300 €, you can pay in 12 instalments at 0 %. For example, full legs in a 10-session package for 1.800 € would be 12 instalments of 150 €.
  • Flat rate: The VIP flat rate starts at 109 € a month. You can find the terms on the VIP flat rate page.
  • Before you buy: the 0 € trial session includes a skin type check, test pulses and one complete treatment area, with no obligation to buy or subscribe.
  • Additional sessions: at the single session price for the area according to the price list, 79 € for underarms.

Red flags in consultations and contracts

Some signs are enough of a reason to politely end the conversation. Here are eight of them.

  • Pressure to sign immediately. Hearing "only today" during your first consultation is a bad sign. A trustworthy offer will still be valid next week.
  • No mention of wavelength. If they can't tell you which wavelength they use, they also can't tell you if it's right for your skin type.
  • No skin type check, no test pulses. This is especially risky if you have dark or tanned skin.
  • Promises instead of explanations. Claims like "hair-free forever after three sessions" or "you won't feel a thing" don't align with the hair growth cycle or clinical studies. The Cochrane review by Haedersdal and Gøtzsche 2006 found around a 50 percent hair reduction up to six months after treatment, but long-term data over several years was lacking.
  • Tiny areas as bait. A cheap starting price, but it doesn't answer how much a complete treatment area will actually cost.
  • Treatment despite a fresh tan. No sun for two weeks before every session is the rule, not the exception.
  • Dodging the qualification issue. NiSV certification is mandatory, even in a beauty studio.
  • Lasers for grey hair. Anyone selling you a course of laser treatments for white or grey hair is selling you sessions that won't work.

How to read reviews properly

Meaningful reviews describe a specific area, the progress over several sessions, and how the studio handles problems, and they are spread out over a longer period of time.

Stars alone don't help much. Read the texts and look out for four things. First: Is it about multiple sessions? The results only show over time; a review after the first appointment mostly tells you about friendliness. Second: How does the studio respond to criticism? Objective answers are a good sign, excuses are a bad one. Third: Are the reviews spread over months and years, or did a lot come in all at once? Fourth: Is a skin type or area mentioned that matches yours? One review from someone with similar skin is worth more than ten general ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best laser hair removal for Köln?

The one where the wavelength and energy match your skin type, a specialist with NiSV certification treats you, the skin is cooled before every pulse, and the contract clearly sets out the duration, cancellation policy and series price. For light to medium skin, Alexandrit 755 nm is efficient; for dark and tanned skin, Nd:YAG 1064 nm is safer. Laserazor doesn't have a studio in Köln, the nearest one opens in January 2027 in Düsseldorf.

What questions should I ask during the consultation?

Ask about the method and wavelength, the best wavelength for your skin type, proof of NiSV certification, the cooling system, test pulses, the realistic number of sessions (8 to 12), preparation and aftercare, top-ups, and whether you can combine multiple zones in one appointment.

How long should a laser hair removal package be valid for?

Long enough for the whole series with a buffer. Ten sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart take about one to one and a half years. Laserazor packages with 3, 5 or 10 sessions are valid for 24 months and in all studios.

Can I cancel a package?

Every provider sets their own contract terms. Before you buy, ask what happens to unused sessions and get it in writing. If you're buying online or over the phone, make sure to ask about your cancellation rights. At Laserazor, you can always have a 0 € trial session for a full zone before committing to a package – no purchase, no subscription – and decide afterwards.

Does paying in instalments make sense for laser hair removal?

Yes, as long as it's interest-free and the total amount is clearly stated in the contract. At Laserazor, any total over 300 € can be split into 12 instalments at 0 % – for example, a 10-session package for full legs at 1.800 € would be 12 instalments of 150 €. With other providers, always check the interest rate, the contracting party, and the total amount.

How do I spot an unprofessional provider?

By pressure to sign up on the spot, no mention of the wavelength used, skipping the skin type check and test pulses, promises like 'hair-free forever after three sessions', bait pricing for tiny areas, dodging questions about their NiSV qualifications, and selling laser treatments for grey or white hair.

How should I read laser studio reviews?

Look out for whether a review covers multiple sessions, how the studio responds to criticism, if the reviews are spread out over months and years, and whether they mention a skin type or treatment zone similar to yours. Across all existing studios, Laserazor has 5,0 stars from 3.266 reviews on ProvenExpert and over 2.600 Google reviews.

When is a provider in Köln a better choice than one in Düsseldorf?

If you're only having a small zone treated and the provider in Köln meets all the criteria, if you want to start before January 2027, if you have mostly grey or white hair and need electrolysis, or if a skin condition needs to be checked by a doctor first.

Are there any reviews for Laserazor Düsseldorf yet?

No. The studio doesn't open until January 2027, so it doesn't have its own reviews yet. Across all existing Laserazor studios, we have 5,0 stars from 3.266 reviews on ProvenExpert and over 2.600 Google reviews.

¹ 'Permanent' means: after a complete series, no hair that the laser has reached will grow back in the treated zone. No laser can reach grey, white and very light hairs. Hormonal changes can trigger new growth, in which case a top-up session is usually enough.
