The essentials at a glance
- For healthy skin, a laser studio with NiSV certification is allowed to remove hair with a laser; this certification has been mandatory since 31.12.2020.
- See a dermatologist first if you have skin conditions, are taking photosensitising medication, are pregnant, or experience sudden heavy hair growth, for example, if PCOS is suspected.
- Costs: A doctor's practice following GOÄ for underarms is usually around 90 to 150 € per session, while Laserazor is 48 € per session in a 10-session package.
- What matters most are the wavelength, cooling and device class, not whether the sign says doctor's practice or studio.
- In NRW, the regional authorities monitor the NiSV; Laserazor is opening in January 2027 at Elisabethstraße 30, 40217 Düsseldorf.
Dermatologist or laser studio: the short answer
For healthy skin, a laser studio in Düsseldorf with NiSV-certified specialists is the usual route for laser hair removal; you should see a dermatologist first if skin conditions, medications, pregnancy or unexplained, potentially hormonal hair growth are involved.
Both are allowed to remove hair with a laser. So the question isn't who is allowed to do it, but who is the right choice for your situation. A dermatologist can diagnose conditions, find the root cause and prescribe medication. A specialised laser studio does one main thing, day in, day out: permanent¹ laser hair removal at fixed prices per zone. The table shows which route is best for which situation.
| Your situation | First step |
|---|---|
| healthy skin, dark hair, no medication | Laser studio with NiSV certification |
| tanned or dark skin, skin type IV to VI | Laser studio with Nd:YAG 1064 nm or clinic with Nd:YAG |
| Eczema, inflammation or other skin condition in the zone | Dermatologist, then depending on the diagnosis |
| Medication that makes you sensitive to light | check with a doctor if and when you can have laser treatment |
| sudden heavy hair growth, suspected PCOS | check with a doctor, laser treatment is often perfectly fine afterwards |
| pregnant | wait and seek medical advice |
| suspicious mole in the area | dermatologist for assessment |
This guide explains what the NiSV requires, what only doctors are allowed to do, when you should visit a clinic first, how costs differ, and how you can check both a medical practice and a studio using the same checklist.
What the NiSV requires
The NiSV is the regulation for protection against the harmful effects of non-ionising radiation when used on humans; it has been in effect nationwide since 31.12.2020 and makes certified expertise mandatory for laser and IPL hair removal.
Since the end of 2020, according to the NiSV, anyone using laser or IPL for hair removal on humans needs certified expertise. This applies in a studio just as much as in a medical practice. This expertise ensures that the person treating you understands the skin, the device, and the risks. The Federal Ministry for the Environment explains which treatments fall under the regulation in its questions and answers on the NiSV.
Enforcement is regulated by the federal states. In Nordrhein-Westfalen, the district governments are responsible, specifically the occupational health and safety departments. Anyone operating lasers for hair removal commercially must notify the responsible authority before starting operations. What this specifically means for studios in NRW is explained in the guide NiSV in NRW: Who is allowed to laser?.

For you as a client, this means: ask for the certificate of expertise of the person treating you. A reputable studio and a reputable medical practice will show it without hesitation. At Laserazor, 16 specialists with NiSV expertise work in our existing studios, and we are also looking for specialists with this expertise for Düsseldorf.
What only doctors are allowed to do
Treatments that intentionally damage tissue remain reserved for doctors under the NiSV; laser hair removal is not one of them. It is a cosmetic treatment that specialists with certified expertise are allowed to perform.
Regardless of the NiSV, there are tasks that always belong in medical hands because they are medical practice:
- Making diagnoses: for example, whether redness is eczema or whether a mole is harmless.
- Investigating causes: for example, why hair is suddenly growing thicker, including examinations and blood tests.
- Prescribing and assessing medication: the studio does not decide whether a medication makes the skin sensitive to light and whether you can pause taking it.
- Treating skin conditions: a laser studio does not treat diseased skin.
A good studio knows this limit and sticks to it. During the skin type check, the specialist will ask about medications, skin conditions, and anything unusual. If anything stands out, the right response is: "Please have a doctor check this first."
When to see a dermatologist first
You should see a dermatologist before laser treatment if you have skin conditions in the treatment area, are taking medications that make your skin sensitive to light, are pregnant, or experience sudden strong or unusual hair growth. In these cases, your health comes first, and the hair comes second.
Skin conditions in the treatment area
Inflamed, irritated, or infected skin cannot be lasered. The treatment can only start once your dermatologist gives the green light. This also applies to open wounds, fresh scars, and severe irritation after shaving.
Medications
Some medications make the skin sensitive to light, which you'll find in the package leaflet. If so, the laser can trigger reactions that wouldn't normally happen. Mention all medications during your skin type check, including herbal ones, and check with your doctor if and when you can have laser treatment. You should never stop taking a medication on your own.
Hormonal hair growth and suspected PCOS
If hair suddenly grows thicker or in new places, like on your chin, chest, or stomach, there might be a hormonal cause behind it. One possible reason is polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS for short. This needs to be checked by a doctor, for example at a gynaecologist or endocrinologist. Once the cause is known, laser treatment is often perfectly fine. Just keep in mind that a few new hairs might appear after your series of sessions, meaning a top-up will be needed. You can find more background info in our guide on hirsutism and hypertrichosis, and help with female facial hair in our guide on permanent female facial hair removal in Düsseldorf.
Pregnancy and moles
During pregnancy, it's best to postpone your treatment and get medical advice. The specialist will avoid dark moles and tattoos because their pigment absorbs the light. If a mole has changed, have a doctor look at it first.
Costs: GOÄ at the clinic, fixed prices in the studio
Dermatology clinics bill laser hair removal as a private service according to the medical fee schedule (GOÄ), usually around 90 to 150 € per session for underarms, often without package discounts. At Laserazor, underarms cost 79 € for a single session and 48 € per session in a package of 10.
| Dermatology clinic | Laserazor Düsseldorf from January 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Medical fee schedule (GOÄ), self-pay service | fixed price per full area |
| Underarms per session | usually around 90 to 150 € | 79 € single, 48 € in a 10-session package |
| Ten underarm sessions | around 900 to 1.500 € | 480 € |
| Packages | often without package discount | 3, 5 or 10 sessions, 20 to 45 percent cheaper per session, valid for 24 months |
| Diagnosis and prescription | yes | no, if we notice anything unusual, we recommend seeing a doctor |
| Trial treatment | depending on the practice | 0 € trial session with one full zone |
The price in a practice depends on the billing code, multiplier and area according to the GOÄ. That's why practices vary, and it's worth getting a quote. Comparing prices is especially worthwhile for large areas, because the practice price goes up with the size of the area: full legs at Laserazor cost 180 € per session in a 10-session package, full intimate area 86 €. You usually pay for laser hair removal yourself, whether at a practice or a studio. If you have a medical reason, it's best to check directly with your health insurance to see if they'll cover any of the costs. All prices and packages are in our guide Laser hair removal Düsseldorf: Prices.
Equipment: wavelength and device class matter, not the sign on the door
Whether it's a practice or a studio, the laser itself is what counts: its wavelength, cooling system and device class. Alexandrit with 755 nm is suitable for light to medium skin, Nd:YAG with 1064 nm for dark and tanned skin. Having both means you can treat all skin types from I to VI.
Medical lasers for hair removal are usually class IIb medical devices. You'll find the same device class in dermatology practices and good studios, including all existing Laserazor studios. Some practices also use IPL, a filtered flashlamp that isn't a laser. So always ask which device and wavelength they use for your treatment. In Düsseldorf, just like in all Laserazor studios, we work with Alexandrit 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, with cooling right before every pulse.
The risks are the same in a practice and a studio if the energy or cooling isn't right. The Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz lists redness, pigment changes and burns if the wrong energy is used, and recommends treatment by qualified professionals. Find out more about the tech under Technology, and more about safety under Safety.
Four common misconceptions about practices and studios
Most misunderstandings happen because 'doctor' is equated with 'safe' and 'studio' with 'unregulated cosmetics'. Neither is true.
- 'Only doctors are allowed to laser.' False. For hair removal, the NiSV requires specialist knowledge, not a medical licence. Treatments that intentionally damage tissue are reserved for doctors.
- 'It's automatically safer in a practice.' Not necessarily. Safety depends on the wavelength, energy, cooling and the experience of the person treating you. A practice using IPL isn't safer than a studio using Nd:YAG for dark skin.
- 'A studio won't check my skin.' A good studio will do a skin type check before your first session, ask about medications and skin conditions, and do test pulses. They just don't make medical diagnoses.
- 'IPL and laser are the same thing.' No. IPL is a filtered flashlamp with a broad spectrum, while a laser works with a single wavelength. Our guide Comparing methods explains the difference.
Checklist: how to check a practice and a studio
With eight questions, you can check any practice and any studio in Düsseldorf the same way, regardless of whether you're treated by a doctor or a specialist.
- Expertise: Does the person treating you have proof of expertise under NiSV?
- Wavelength: Which laser is used, and at what wavelength? Is it actually a laser or IPL?
- Two wavelengths: Can the device safely treat dark and tanned skin too?
- Cooling: Is the skin cooled immediately before each pulse?
- Skin type check: Do they ask about your skin type, medication, and skin conditions before the first session, and do they do test pulses?
- Honest answers: Do they tell you it takes 8 to 12 sessions, and that grey, white, and light blonde hair won't respond?
- Price: Is the price for the entire zone, and how long are packages valid for?
- Limits: If anything looks unusual, are you referred to a doctor for clarification instead of being treated right away?

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a laser studio in Düsseldorf allowed to remove hair with a laser?
Yes. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure that specialists with proven expertise under NiSV are allowed to perform. However, treatments that intentionally damage tissue are strictly reserved for doctors.
What is proof of expertise under NiSV?
The NiSV has been in effect nationwide since 31.12.2020 and requires anyone using a laser or IPL for hair removal to have specialist certification. This applies to both studios and medical practices. Ask for the credentials of the person treating you.
When should I see a dermatologist instead of going to a laser studio?
If you have skin conditions in the treatment area, are taking medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, are pregnant, have suspicious moles, or experience sudden heavy hair growth. In these cases, getting a diagnosis and finding the cause comes first. Afterwards, laser treatment in a studio is often possible.
How much does laser hair removal cost at a dermatologist in Düsseldorf?
Dermatologists charge according to the medical fee schedule, which usually means around 90 to 150 € per session for underarms, often without package discounts. At Laserazor, underarms cost 79 € for a single session and 48 € per session in a pack of 10, making ten sessions 480 €.
Is the laser at a dermatologist better than at a studio?
Not necessarily. What matters most is the wavelength, cooling system, device class, and the expertise of the person treating you. Class IIb medical lasers with Alexandrit 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm are used in both medical practices and good studios.
Can I have laser hair removal if I have PCOS?
Yes, as long as the cause has been checked by a doctor. With hormonal hair growth, a few new hairs might appear after your course of sessions, so a top-up is a good idea. If you suspect you have PCOS – for example, due to sudden heavy hair growth on your chin, chest, or stomach – see a doctor first.
Which medications are a problem for laser hair removal?
Mainly medications that make your skin sensitive to light; you'll find this in the patient information leaflet. Make sure to mention all medications, including herbal remedies, during your skin type check. You should discuss if and when you can have laser treatment with your doctor – never stop taking any medication on your own.
Who regulates laser studios in NRW?
The enforcement of the NiSV is managed by the federal states; in Nordrhein-Westfalen, the district governments' occupational health and safety departments are responsible. Anyone operating lasers for commercial hair removal must notify the relevant authority before starting their business.
How do I spot a reputable laser studio in Düsseldorf?
Look for specialists with NiSV certification, a laser with a specified wavelength, cooling before every pulse, a skin type check with test pulses, and fixed prices per complete treatment area. A trustworthy studio will also tell you that you need 8 to 12 sessions and advise you to see a doctor if anything looks unusual.

¹ 'Permanent' means: after a complete series, no hair that the laser has reached will grow back in the treated zone. No laser can reach grey, white and very light hairs. Hormonal changes can trigger new growth, in which case a top-up session is usually enough.
This guide provides general information and doesn't replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure; if you have skin conditions, take medications that increase light sensitivity, are pregnant or have unexplained hair growth, it makes sense to get medical advice first.
