The honest answer: Yes, but …

Every laser hair removal causes some sensation. It would be a lie to say you won't feel a thing. But: modern laser devices with active Cryo cooling make a massive difference between "briefly uncomfortable" and "really painful".

What exactly happens during a laser pulse?

The laser emits a very short (milliseconds) pulse of light, which is absorbed by the melanin (hair pigment). This energy is converted into heat, which destroys the hair root. For a fraction of a second, you'll feel: a slight hot prickle, like a rubber band snap. Then immediately the cold of the Cryo air again. The pattern repeats quickly across the zone.

What do the individual areas feel like?

Every zone is different. Here is an honest assessment on a pain scale from 1 (almost nothing) to 10 (dentist without anaesthetic):

ZonePain levelDurationComment
Upper Lip3 / 105 min.brief, mild tingling
Chin3 / 1010 minssimilar to upper lip
Underarms4 / 1010 minsCryo handles that well
Bikini Area5 / 1015 min.more sensitive zone, but very bearable
Full intimate area5–6 / 1020 min.briefly intense, absolutely bearable
Calves3 / 1020 min.thick skin, low pain
Upper Thighs3 / 1020 min.similar to lower leg
Chest / stomach / back3–4 / 1015–30 min.thick skin, no problem
Nape2 / 1010 minsalmost nothing

Comparison: Laser vs. waxing vs. plucking

Laser + Cryo

3–6 / 10 — a brief moment, then just cold. 8–12 sessions, then permanently1 done.

Waxing

6–8 / 10 — every single spot hurts. Repeat every 3–4 weeks, for years.

Plucking

1–2 / 10 — superficial, but daily. Ingrown hairs are almost guaranteed.

What helps with pain during the treatment?

  1. Breathe deeply and evenly — holding your breath makes it feel more intense
  2. Get plenty of rest beforehand — tired nerves are more sensitive
  3. Drink plenty of water and have a little something to eat before your appointment
  4. Menstruating? Your skin is more sensitive in the first 2 days — reschedule if necessary
  5. No painkillers before your appointment (please discuss with our practitioners)

And after the treatment?

Mild redness like a sunburn — fades within 1–4 hours. Cooling with aloe vera or panthenol helps. No sun, no sports, no hot showers for 24 hours. Everything is back to normal after 48 hours.

Bottom line

Laser hurts — but only briefly and it's very manageable. Compared to waxing, the pain is significantly lower. And compared to a lifetime of shaving, which might not hurt but is a constant hassle, laser is clearly the grown-up solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only after consulting with us. Some medications can change your skin's reaction. Ibuprofen is usually fine, and so is Paracetamol.
Because most hairs are active at the beginning. There are fewer after each session, the laser pulse targets fewer roots, and the treatment becomes noticeably gentler.
Yes, 3–5 days before your period, your skin is more sensitive. If possible, schedule your appointment outside this time.
Theoretically yes, but we usually advise against it — the cream can reduce the laser's effectiveness. Try it without first, the Cryo cooling is enough in the vast majority of cases.
