Hair removal: Which method is right for you?

Hair removal works short-term with shaving, creams or waxing, and long-term only with methods that reach the hair root. Here you can compare all common methods by duration, sensation and cost.

Comparison

Seven methods of hair removal.

Shaving, creams, epilators and waxing only remove the hair. Laser, IPL and electrolysis damage the root and therefore have a long-lasting effect.

Costs over time

What smooth legs cost over ten years.

The maths shows why a single course of treatments can pay off compared to ongoing appointments.

  • 1.800 €Laser, package of 10 sessions, one-off
  • around 6.000 €Waxing every four to six weeks
  • around 1.200 €Shaving, plus around 300 hours of your time
Per body area

Which method suits which area.

ZoneThe benefits
Upper lip and chinPlucking and threading are quick but often cause irritation. Laser takes just 10 minutes per appointment.
UnderarmsThick, dark hair responds particularly well to laser. Shaving remains the quick fix in between.
Intimate areaShaving often causes irritation here, and waxing hurts. Laser works without direct skin contact and can reduce ingrown hairs.
LegsLarge area, lots of appointments: this is where you save the most time.
Back and chestHard to reach yourself. A course of treatments in the studio saves you from constant shaving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people want to know.

Laser, IPL and electrolysis last the longest because they damage the hair root. Waxing and sugaring last three to six weeks, epilating two to four weeks, and shaving just a few days.
Depilation removes hair at the skin's surface, like with a razor or cream. Epilation pulls the hair out by the root or damages the root, for example with wax or a laser. That's why the hair grows back more slowly afterwards, or significantly less in the long run.
For legs, a course of 10 laser sessions costs 1.800 €. Waxing adds up to around 6.000 € over ten years. The difference is smaller for smaller areas, but the laser course still pays for itself after a few years.
That depends on the cause. Frequent shaving and waxing often irritate sensitive skin the most. If you have rosacea or eczema, we'll first check if the treatment is right for you. You can find out more in our post about laser on sensitive skin.
Shaving and waxing are often what cause ingrown hairs in the first place. Laser reduces the amount of hair, which can significantly improve the problem. Read more in our guide to razor burn and ingrown hairs.
Electrolysis works on grey, white and very light hair because it doesn't rely on pigment. Grey, white and very light hairs contain hardly any pigment, which is why a laser can't target them.
