The essentials at a glance

  • The NiSV has applied across NRW since 31.12.2020: anyone removing hair with a laser or IPL needs a specialist qualification. Enforcement is handled by the regional authorities.
  • The only Laserazor studio in NRW opens in January 2027 at Elisabethstraße 30, Düsseldorf-Unterbilk. There is no Laserazor studio in Köln or the Ruhrgebiet.
  • To Düsseldorf Hbf: Neuss 10 to 15 mins, Köln 22 to 30 mins, Essen 25 to 35 mins, Dortmund 50 to 70 mins, Aachen 75 to 90 mins.
  • Prices per complete area, just like in all our studios: underarms 48 €, full legs 180 € per session in a package of 10. Dermatologists usually charge around 90 to 150 € per session for underarms.
  • 8 to 12 sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart means travelling roughly every two months for about a year to a year and a half.

Laser hair removal in NRW: the essentials at a glance

Laser hair removal in NRW follows the same rules as everywhere else in Germany: since 31.12.2020, the NiSV has required a specialist qualification for any hair removal using a laser or IPL, and in Nordrhein-Westfalen, enforcement is handled by the regional authorities.

With around 18 million residents, Nordrhein-Westfalen is the most populous federal state (IT.NRW). The range of services on offer is correspondingly broad. Dermatologists bill according to the medical fee schedule. Chains and beauty salons often work with IPL or diode lasers and advertise prices for tiny areas. Studios with Alexandrit and Nd:YAG lasers are less common.

Laserazor has exactly one studio in NRW: Laserazor Düsseldorf at Elisabethstraße 30 in the Unterbilk district. It opens in January 2027. There is no Laserazor studio in Köln, the Ruhrgebiet, the Niederrhein, or the Bergisches Land. This guide therefore serves two purposes. It explains what you should look out for with laser hair removal in any city in NRW, regardless of where you get treated. And it gives you an honest look at how long it takes to get to Düsseldorf from your city, and how to plan a series of 8 to 12 sessions including travel. Ultimately, you decide for yourself whether the journey is worth it.

The legal situation: the NiSV applies across NRW

There are no special rules for laser hair removal in NRW, just the nationwide NiSV: since 31.12.2020, treatments can only be performed by someone who can prove they have the specialist qualification for hair removal with laser and IPL (NiSV).

The NiSV is the ordinance on protection against the harmful effects of non-ionising radiation when used on humans. It regulates who is allowed to use lasers and IPL on people, and makes a proven specialist qualification mandatory for hair removal.

The regulation is federal law, but it's enforced by the states (BMUKN). In Nordrhein-Westfalen, the district governments handle this under occupational health and safety. Anyone running a commercial laser for hair removal has to notify the relevant authority before starting up. What this means for you: the rules are exactly the same in Aachen, Bonn, Essen and Düsseldorf. A studio in a smaller town doesn't have looser requirements than one in the state capital.

The NiSV also distinguishes between treatments that are allowed outside a medical practice with the right qualifications, and treatments reserved for doctors. Hair removal belongs to the first group. Treatments that intentionally damage tissue belong to the second. So, a beauty or laser studio can remove hair as long as the person operating the device has the required qualifications.

Where Laserazor is in NRW: Düsseldorf from January 2027

Laserazor Düsseldorf is the seventh Laserazor studio and the only one in Nordrhein-Westfalen: Elisabethstraße 30, 40217 Düsseldorf, in the Unterbilk district on the border to Friedrichstadt, opening in January 2027.

With around 630.000 residents, Düsseldorf is the state capital, while Köln is the largest city in the state with around 1,1 million. For Köln, Bonn and Leverkusen, for the Ruhrgebiet, the Niederrhein and the Bergische Land, Düsseldorf is the nearest Laserazor studio. Laserazor offers treatments in seven studios across five cities: Berlin Pestalozzistraße 13 and Danckelmannstraße 24, München Steinstraße 57 and Westendstraße 142, Augsburg Unter dem Bogen 2, Hamburg Poststraße 36 and, from January 2027, Düsseldorf Elisabethstraße 30. Purchased packages are valid in all studios.

Just like in all Laserazor studios, treatments in Düsseldorf are performed using Alexandrit 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm, with cooling right before every pulse. Laserazor is currently looking for specialists with NiSV qualifications to join the team – you can find our open roles under Careers. We already have 16 specialists with NiSV qualifications working across our existing studios.

Until the opening, there is no online booking for Düsseldorf. But you can sign up at Register for Düsseldorf and you'll be invited to the first appointments, including a 0 € trial session for the opening. Opening hours will be announced before we open. Naturally, there are no reviews for Düsseldorf yet. Across our existing studios combined, we have 5,0 stars from 3.266 reviews on ProvenExpert and over 2.600 Google reviews. From the main station to Unterbilk

From Düsseldorf main station, take tram 708 or 709 to Graf-Adolf-Platz, then it's about a five-minute walk. Walking via Graf-Adolf-Straße takes a good 20 minutes for the 1.5-kilometre distance.

  • Kirchplatz U-Bahn station: around 200 metres, Wehrhahnlinie U71, U72, U73, and U83.
  • Graf-Adolf-Platz U-Bahn station: around 400 metres, U71, U72, U73, U83, and trams 706, 708, and 709.
  • Bus: Herzogstraße stop is right outside the door.
  • S-Bahn: Change at Bilk station (S8, S11, S28) to the Wehrhahnlinie towards Kirchplatz.
  • Parking: Friedrichstraße underground car park (around 150 metres) and Talstraße multi-storey car park (around 300 metres), both paid.

If you're combining your appointment with a stroll through town: The south end of Königsallee at Graf-Adolf-Platz is around 400 metres away, a good five-minute walk. You can reach Medienhafen and Rheinturm in about 15 minutes on foot, and the Landtag in around ten. All routes from the Düsseldorf districts and the surrounding area can be found in our guide Directions from districts and surrounding areas.

What travel time means for your series

Travel time isn't so much about the cost, but rather whether you can stick to the six to eight-week intervals over roughly one to one and a half years. A series consists of 8 to 12 sessions, which means eight to twelve trips to Düsseldorf.

Our own estimates based on the reference values above.
Travel time to Düsseldorf HbfCitiesWhat this means in practice
up to around 20 minsNeuss, Hilden, DuisburgAn appointment is easy to combine with work, shopping, or meeting up in Düsseldorf.
around 20 to 35 minsMülheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen, Leverkusen, Köln, Solingen, Wuppertal, Krefeld, Mönchengladbach, EssenEasy to schedule as a regular appointment after work or at the weekend.
around 35 to 60 minsGelsenkirchen, Bochum, BonnEspecially worth it if you combine multiple zones in a single appointment.
over 60 mins possibleDortmund (50 to 70 mins), Aachen (75 to 90 mins)Round trip around 100 to 140 minutes from Dortmund, around two and a half to three hours from Aachen. Bundle zones, book appointments early.

A quick calculation: If you're coming from Köln, you'll travel to Düsseldorf around eight to twelve times. At 22 to 30 minutes each way, that's around six to twelve hours of pure train travel over the whole series, not including the walk from the main station to the studio. From Neuss, at 10 to 15 minutes each way, it's around three to six hours. This figure helps you honestly weigh up whether a local provider with good technology and expertise is the better choice for you.

What you should look out for in every city

Whether in Bonn, Krefeld or Dortmund: You can spot a good laser hair removal offer by the NiSV certification, a specified wavelength, a skin type check with test pulses before the first session, and fixed prices per complete zone.

NiSV certification is proof that the person treating you is qualified for hair removal with laser or IPL. Since 31.12.2020, it has been mandatory for any hair removal using these devices.

  1. Expertise of the person treating you. Ask for proof. A reputable studio will show it to you on request.
  2. Wavelength instead of buzzwords. Alexandrit has 755 nm, diode 800 to 810 nm, Nd:YAG 1064 nm (Ibrahimi et al. 2011). If a provider doesn't mention a wavelength, ask whether it's a laser or IPL, a flashlamp with a broad light spectrum.
  3. Technology suited to your skin type. For dark skin types, Nd:YAG is considered the safest choice. With two wavelengths, the studio can choose the technology based on your skin type.
  4. Skin type check and test pulses. Before the first session, not just after a complaint.
  5. Cooling. Ask how the skin is cooled during the treatment.
  6. Laser safety goggles. For you and the specialist, throughout the entire treatment.
  7. Information about risks. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection mentions redness, pigmentation changes and burns if the wrong energy is used (BfS). A good studio will bring this up proactively.
  8. Price per complete zone. With a package price and written timeframe. A price for half an underarm tells you very little.
  9. Honest number of sessions. A realistic estimate is 8 to 12 sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart.

You can find the detailed checklists in our guides Best laser hair removal in Düsseldorf: Checklist and Best laser hair removal for Köln: Checklist. The criteria apply to any city in NRW.

Dermatology clinic, chain or laser studio

In NRW, you'll come across three types of providers, and they differ mainly in billing, technology and pricing.

General market overview, without specific providers.
ProviderBillingTechnologyMakes sense if
Dermatology clinicaccording to the GOÄ, usually around 90 to 150 € per session for underarms, often without package discountsdepending on the practiceyou have a skin condition in the treatment area or your hair growth needs to be medically checked

Dermatology clinics bill laser hair removal as a private service under the medical fee schedule. You should see a doctor if you have skin conditions in the treatment area, take photosensitising medication, or notice sudden, heavy hair growth. If your skin is healthy, a certified studio is a great alternative. For a detailed comparison, check out our guide Dermatologist or laser studio.

Planning a course of treatments with travel

  • Plan a buffer. Missing a train isn't a drama. Check your connection the day before and allow a little extra time for the journey from the main station.

Skin types: which laser suits which skin

Laserazor treats skin types I to VI: Alexandrit 755 nm for light to medium skin, Nd:YAG 1064 nm for dark and tanned skin. Both wavelengths are available in all studios, including in Düsseldorf.

The Fitzpatrick skin type describes in six stages how the skin reacts to the sun. To this day, it forms the basis for choosing the wavelength and energy for laser hair removal (Fitzpatrick 1988).

I verbrennt immer Alexandrit II verbrennt leicht Alexandrit III bräunt langsam Alexandrit IV bräunt leicht Alexandrit oder Nd:YAG V bräunt stark Nd:YAG VI sehr dunkel Nd:YAG
Fitzpatrick skin types (1988) and the wavelength we use to treat them. This matching is a rule of thumb; the skin type check and test pulses before the first session are what really count.

For you, this means: whether your skin is very light or very dark, treatment is possible in a studio with both wavelengths. For dark skin types, Nd:YAG is considered the safest choice (Ibrahimi et al. 2011). Hair colour sets the limits. Grey, white and light blonde hair doesn't react to any laser, and red hair only partially. The skin type check during your trial session will clear this up.

What the studies say about the results: The Cochrane review by Haedersdal and Gøtzsche 2006 found a hair reduction of around 50 percent up to six months after treatment for Alexandrit and diode lasers. Long-term data over years was missing in the evaluated studies. After a complete series, no hair that the laser has reached will permanently¹ grow back in the zone. The guides Alexandrit or Nd:YAG and Laser selection by skin type explain which wavelength suits you.

Preparation and aftercare when you're travelling

Preparation starts four weeks before your appointment, and if you're travelling, you should put it firmly in your calendar so no trip is wasted.
